Currently, Project Zarape requires local processing to function (this keeps our costs down and your data safe!) When you add a file to the program, you’re not actually sending your file anywhere: everything happens right on your computer! However, we’d love for you to share your assignments, documents, and outcomes with us! You can do so using THIS FORM. The same is true if you encounter any errors or issues: if you fill out the troubleshooting form, you may choose to provide us with those files.
Nope! No anti-cheat system is perfect, but our system should keep the bar high enough to discourage the worst impulses in your students. Your mileage may vary based on the types of assignments and readings that you use with PZ. See [HERE] for recommendations of how to maximize the effectiveness of this app! We are especially looking for input from instructors outside of the humanities or computer science.
We are working to continue refining PZ, especially as GenAI tools change and evolve. However, we are ultimately looking to build out an entire suite of educational apps that will give educators more control and interaction with students in their LMS. Check back for more soon!

Project Zarape is a working title for this tool, though we will likely rebrand it as we work towards our larger goals. The name come from both the literal object- a Zarape (or Serape) is a colorful cloak… It also was the name of a favorite restaurant down the street from our high school in Metro Detroit!
Mostly! While every company’s chatbot analyzes documents differently, as of early Summer 2025 Project Zarape is working against all major free large language models. A few of the more expensive “pro” models currently break our protections, though we are working hard to fix that!
